My Must-Share Moment

I had to share this story with you all! (This is Joni, not Aloha.)

I attended the Iroquois Point preschool auction this evening while my husband took care of the kids. I came home and found a large blanket on the floor with several resistance bands from class on top. Apparently, Sara spent the night pushing her baby doll in the stroller, up and down the living room. After a few laps around the house, she would park her baby by the blanket and then lie down and do crunches, or grab the bands and do her version of lat raises and squats.

Jeff told me that it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen. He just watched her and got to see an entire Stroller Strides class replicated for him, as seen by a two-year-old.

And this, ladies, is why I LOVE Stroller Strides!

Mom Marketplace

Food Drive Results

Wow! A big thanks to all the women who made today's Food Drive a smashing success. It took me, Kim and Tasha three trips to the car to carry it all!

We collected 175 pounds of food for the Hawaii Food Bank!

Beth, Stephanie C., Rainey, Jerah, Sharon, Heather and Sharara all won various prizes such as water bottles, a DVD, beach blanket, and the much-coveted Pocket Purifier:)

Rainey and Tasha each won a $10 Gift Card to Menchie's or Aloha Salads.

Jerah and Corren were the 1-Month Free Membership raffle winners.

***

We had 26 moms at class and we all enjoyed sandwiches in the park after class as part of Playgroup. Thank you to Beth for organizing the event! I loved being able to enjoy both food and friends after class.

from l to r: Joni, Michaela, Jessica S., Lisa, Gwen, Patti, Rainey, Margene, Jerah, Teresa, Danielle

delicious dessert!

from Margene:
"The inaugural meeting of the restaurant club was a great success. Stroller Strides moms arrived in their stylish attire and took part in a carefree evening. Cocktails and conversation could not be beat. Twelve ladies passed the night away catching up and unwinding over macadamia nut encrusted fish and other fine Roy’s creations. Dessert was enjoyed by all with chocolate soufflé being a very popular choice!

We are looking forward to the next meeting of this new Stroller Strides adventure. Join us for Second Tuesdays Restaurant Club as we enjoy the culinary offerings of the highly rated Zagat reviewed Orchids at the Halekulani on December 8th."

New Member Spotlight - Rainey

"Aloha everyone! My name is Rainey and I joined Stroller Strides at the beginning of October when my son Henry was 12 weeks old. I absolutely love Stroller Strides! It has been so nice to meet other mommies and their children while getting a fantastic workout. We attend both Ocean Pointe and Kapolei classes and enjoy the different vibe at each location.

My husband Nate and I are originally from Norfolk, Virginia. We are high school sweethearts and have been together for 10 years, married for 4 years. We are a Navy family and Nate works for COMPACFLT, across from Pearl Harbor, as an AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense Officer. We moved to Hawaii in December 2007 but lived over on the Windward side of the island for our first year here. We now live at Fairways Edge in Ocean Pointe with our two rescue kitties, Fred and Ginger, and we love it!

A little bit more about us. Our beautiful son, Henry Jameson, is now 4 months old. He was born 07/08/09 and has been such a blessing and joy in our lives. In addition to my love for being a mommy and a wife, my two other passions in life are photography and dance. I have been dancing since the age of 3 and cannot wait to restart classes once Henry is a little older! You’ll never see me out without a camera so make sure to smile!"

Thanks Rainey for introducing yourself to us and sending the wonderful photos!

New Member Spotlight - Lauren

"Hi,

My name is Lauren and I am very excited to be a new member of Stroller Strides. My husband Paul and I had our baby, Lily, in November of 2008.
Since then, I have seen the ladies of Stroller Strides running around Kapolei Park on numerous occasions and kept telling myself that I needed to get into something like that. Finally, after seeing the big turnout on Halloween (and 11 months of being lazy and blaming it on being too busy to workout), I decided to look into who that group of ladies were at the park.

A quick google search led me to Stroller Strides. After just 2 weeks with the group, I love it and am so happy I decided to join.

My husband Paul and I moved to Hawaii 3 years ago. He is originally from California and I am from New York. We met in the military at Fort Bliss, TX, and have moved around quite a bit since then. Hawaii is by far our favorite assignment! We enjoy doing most anything outdoors, so the weather in Hawaii is perfect for our lifestyle. We live in Kapolei, so Lily and I
will be attending the Kapolei Stroller Strides most often.

Lily and I look are really looking forward to getting to know all of the ladies and children of Stroller Strides."

Thank you Lauren for being our newest mom spotlight, and WELCOME!

BYOB

Bring Your Own Band!

As of December 1, all Stroller Striders will need to have their own bands for class. This is common practice for Stroller Strides nationwide, and it is a great idea for several reasons:
  • It will allow us to keep the membership fees at $55/month for 2010
  • We will be able to invest in some specialty workout items (like spongeballs)
  • You will have a band to use at home and on vacation
  • The bands will be more hygienic (important as we enter flu season)
Please reserve the bands you want no later than Friday, November 13th to ensure delivery by December 1st. Our order will be placed as a group, and SS will pay shipping and tax. After November 13th, you will need to order directly from SPRI. It is also possible to buy a band at Sports Authority or Target, but you will pay more than with SPRI.

Starting next month, instructors will have a few spare bands on hand for visitors and new members only.

What To Buy

Joni recommends purchasing both a green and a red band. Some movements can only be done effectively with a green band, regardless of fitness level.

If you are a beginner, she suggests you buy a red now to have on hand for when you need the added resistance.

Blue bands are also available if you'd like to have one for squats and other lower-body strength work, or if your husband comes to class with you.

If you're interested, you can purchase a flat band and/or spongeball. A spongeball in particular will allow you to mix things up and keep your muscles guessing.

Please check your email for a link to reserve your bands. Your order will be tracked via your email, and your credit card will be charged on November 16, 2009. If you do not have a credit card on file, go ahead and reserve your bands and Joni will be in touch.

November Mom's Night Out

For this month's MNO we will be going to see the movie "New Moon," the 2nd movie in the Twilight Saga.

When: Friday, November 20th (opening night!)
Time: 7:45pm show

We highly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance because the show will definitely sell out. You can purchase from:

Let Joni know if you will be attending so that she can organize the group. Hope to see you all there!

U.S. Vets Patriot Walk Run

Date: Saturday, November 14th, 8:00am

5105 Iroquois Ave., Ewa Beach

Registration closes on Nov. 12th. Please click on the website for more information and to register.

Baby Shower

Aren't they gorgeous? Celeste, Alyssa, Tania and Sonya. Liz is post-baby bump and was nursing Santi during this photo.

Our scheduled pool party to celebrate the babies got rained out, turning our event into a literal shower, but we had a great time regardless at my house hanging out over sandwiches, fruit salad, 7-layer dip, and strawberries dipped in chocolate. I really enjoyed spending time with everyone and seeing all of us in "normal" clothes! Seriously, it's always startling.

This was very much a group effort. Thanks to the women who attended the event, brought food to share, and contributed to the group gift (all of the expecting moms received an organic Stroller Strides onesie and a board book).

Teresa, Iman, Beth, Laura O., Michele, Betsy and Jen (Kapolei) and Brandy, Sarah, Rainey, and Laura A. (Ocean Pointe).

Borrowing Liz's sweet one-month-old baby for as long as possible!

Halloween Fest!

What a crazy fun Friday class and Playgroup (emphasis on crazy)! Class had 31 moms, 2 dads, and an estimated 45 kids. (Love Furlough Friday!)

Buffy and Jill went all out as 80s Aerobics Instructors, and I have to tell you, they were rocking those leotards.

Big, big thanks to Beth and her team who put on such a fun event for all of us. The kids painted pumpkins, played games, won tons of prizes, and managed to crack open the world's toughest pumpkin pinata. Props to Beth, Margene, Rainey, Teresa, Jessica S., and Lisa for all the effort they put into a great event.
