Meet the Trainers: Rosy

Rosy and daughters Isabella (2) and Berea (5)

Rosy writes:
"My story is I gained 55 pounds with my first daughter Berea. My pregnancy was uncomfortable and my labor and delivery was very long, as was my recovery. When I got pregnant with Isabella, I told myself that I would not allow the same thing to happen. I joined Stroller Strides in Monterey, CA when I was 5 months pregnant. I ended up only gaining 27 pounds, my labor and delivery was 2 hours long, and my recovery was quick and painless. I was ready and running by my 6-week checkup. When I saw the drastic change between my two pregnancies, it was my goal to get as many pre- and post-natal mommies to attend Stroller Strides with me. That turned into a desire to teach Stroller Strides (since I used to teach elementary school before becoming a mommy). It was a great fit, and still is. I am excited about this opportunity to teach in Hawaii. This is my third franchise, and I love how everyone is always so nice, we all have the same goals and desires to be healthy, and be with our children. One of my favorite things is to watch the little ones do lunges or push ups with us, that means we are passing healthy habits to our children as well. Speaking as someone who was left a HORRIBLE health history, it is truly a gift we are giving our children to show them that exercising (with friends none the less) and getting outside is important. I look forward to getting to know all of you and your beautiful children. Thank you for those of you who have already given me such a warm, aloha welcome!"

Meet the Trainers (Part 4 - Kim M)

re-post, meet Kim!

•••••••

Welcome to one of our newest trainers (but not a new member), Kim! Kim has AFAA Group Excercise, Adult/Child/Infant CPR and First Aid certifications, and writes this message to introduce herself to us:

"My name is Kim, and I am very excited to have the pleasure of joining Stroller Strides as an instructor. As a member of Stroller Strides, I’ve looked forward to each workout and the friendship, camaraderie and support that has strengthened me as a mom and person. Fitness has always been an important of my life, and as a mom, I love that Stroller Strides combines fun and physical activity in a family oriented environment. The gorgeous Hawaiian background is simply the icing on the cake!

Normally, I attend and instruct class with my son, TJ, who is 2 years old. My husband, Brian, and I also have a 5 year old daughter, Abby. I was raised in Steeler Country, aka Pittsburgh, PA, and am a proud engineering graduate of Penn State. I've been employed as a project engineer, worked as a financial liaison for a military support group and taught students at Sylvan Learning Center. Brian has been in the Navy for 14 years and we’ve lived in all four corners of the mainland, including here in Hawaii. I’ve enjoyed our locations near open water, and in addition to teaching and participating in Stroller Strides, I love to hike, bike and take my family to the beach.

I’m eager to see each of you in class, and look forward to many fun times together!"

Thank you Kim for taking the time to tell us a little bit more about yourself!

Meet the Trainers: Jill

AFAA Certified - Group Fitness Instructor
ACE Certified - Personal Trainer
American Red Cross - First Aid, AED, Infant, Child, & Adult CPR

Jill with her daughters, Makaila (left) and Alexis

I am the proud Mom of Makaila (Moo) 6 years old and Alexis (Sweets) almost 4. I am also so proud to say Stroller Strides has been apart of our lives for the past 6 years now. Wow, how time flies! =)

Not knowing many Moms after the birth of our daughter Makaila, I decided to try a SS class when she was four months old. I loved it of course! Buffy's class (for those that didn't know Buffy, she was an amazing instructor along with another that originally brought SS to Hawaii) was the second class I took. For those that knew her, need I say more... I started out as member, became playgroup leader, and then an instructor. I have been teaching now for over 5 years. I have taught SS classes in every location on the island. I sure do love it on the Leeward side. =)

Just a few facts about me... I have been living in Hawaii for 20 years now. After high school, I went away to college on the mainland & then transferred back to school in Hawaii. After school I worked for American Cancer Society for 2 years, and then for United Airlines as a flight attendant for 6 years. In 2001, 6 months after we met, my husband Bryant whisked me away to New Zealand to watch him do his 1st Ironman Triathlon. Off the subject, that is where he proposed. =) How inspiring to see an Ironman Race! Wow! Ever since then I have been doing triathlons right along with him. I have competed in many Sprint & Olympic distance triathlons, and done 3 Half Ironman Triathlons on the Big Island. The one year I was signed up to do Ironman New Zealand, I got pregnant with Makaila. Our suprise angel! I have done many running races, to include 4 half marathons, and 2 whole marathons. We still try and get our races in throughout the year, but not nearly as many we were doing before our girls. That is still a goal of mine, to complete an Ironman Triathlon! =)

I am truly blessed to be apart of Stroller Strides. Fitness is my passion! As long as I can continue to show others that they can reach their true potential in whatever their fitness goals may be, I will be out there saying, "abs tight, only one more set, push it ladies!" What amazing women and children I have met over the years. I am so thankful for all that Stroller Strides has brought into our lives.

Alexis and Makaila

Meet the Trainers (Part 2 - Buffy)

We are re-posting our "Meet the Trainers" series so that our new member can learn a little more about our fabulous, amazing trainers! Look for a new post each Friday.

••••••••

Our second "Meet the Trainers" post highlights everyone's favorite "kick your booty" trainer, Buffy!

Buffy is originally from San Diego, California and has lived in Hawaii for 14 years. She moved to Hawaii a few years after graduating from San Diego State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She also received her California Teaching Credential from National University in San Diego.

Buffy is a group fitness instructor through AFAA, Aerobics & Fitness Association of America, and is also trained in First Aid, AED and Adult/Child/Infant CPR.

Buffy writes:

"I met my husband, Pete, here in Hawaii through a local running group. Pete and I both ran competitively for Team Nike Town in Honolulu for a number of years. I resigned from the team when I found out I was due with my second child. I taught with the Department of Education for 7 years before I had my first child, Malia Estella, now 6. It was then that I decided to bring Stroller Strides to Hawaii as a co-owner along with my good friend, Katy Mobley. Here I was able to integrate teaching, fitness and my child into 1 fun program. I was co-owner of Stroller Strides for over 2 years, and have taught classes for over 5 years. I have since had 2 more children, Murphy John, 4 and McCully Regis, 2.

I live in Makakilo with my family and mini schnauzer, Mocha, and keep myself busy with teaching Stroller Strides classes, training for marathons (Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in June '08 and the Boston Marathon in April '09). I recently mentored a group of runners with Team in Training, which is part of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, for the Honolulu Marathon '08, and volunteer at my children's school.

I love Hawaii, the people, the culture and being able to teach quality work out classes outdoors year round. Despite both being from the mainland, Pete is from Boston, we have chosen to make this beautiful island our home. Stroller Strides has been such a bonus in my life and meeting so many women from different backgrounds is fun."

Thanks Buffy for letting us all get to know you a little better!

All you other Stroller Strides moms, don't forget to send me a photo(s) and a bio for our mom spotlight posts!

New Member Spotlight - Rainey

"Aloha everyone! My name is Rainey and I joined Stroller Strides at the beginning of October when my son Henry was 12 weeks old. I absolutely love Stroller Strides! It has been so nice to meet other mommies and their children while getting a fantastic workout. We attend both Ocean Pointe and Kapolei classes and enjoy the different vibe at each location.

My husband Nate and I are originally from Norfolk, Virginia. We are high school sweethearts and have been together for 10 years, married for 4 years. We are a Navy family and Nate works for COMPACFLT, across from Pearl Harbor, as an AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense Officer. We moved to Hawaii in December 2007 but lived over on the Windward side of the island for our first year here. We now live at Fairways Edge in Ocean Pointe with our two rescue kitties, Fred and Ginger, and we love it!

A little bit more about us. Our beautiful son, Henry Jameson, is now 4 months old. He was born 07/08/09 and has been such a blessing and joy in our lives. In addition to my love for being a mommy and a wife, my two other passions in life are photography and dance. I have been dancing since the age of 3 and cannot wait to restart classes once Henry is a little older! You’ll never see me out without a camera so make sure to smile!"

Thanks Rainey for introducing yourself to us and sending the wonderful photos!

New Member Spotlight - Lauren

"Hi,

My name is Lauren and I am very excited to be a new member of Stroller Strides. My husband Paul and I had our baby, Lily, in November of 2008.
Since then, I have seen the ladies of Stroller Strides running around Kapolei Park on numerous occasions and kept telling myself that I needed to get into something like that. Finally, after seeing the big turnout on Halloween (and 11 months of being lazy and blaming it on being too busy to workout), I decided to look into who that group of ladies were at the park.

A quick google search led me to Stroller Strides. After just 2 weeks with the group, I love it and am so happy I decided to join.

My husband Paul and I moved to Hawaii 3 years ago. He is originally from California and I am from New York. We met in the military at Fort Bliss, TX, and have moved around quite a bit since then. Hawaii is by far our favorite assignment! We enjoy doing most anything outdoors, so the weather in Hawaii is perfect for our lifestyle. We live in Kapolei, so Lily and I
will be attending the Kapolei Stroller Strides most often.

Lily and I look are really looking forward to getting to know all of the ladies and children of Stroller Strides."

Thank you Lauren for being our newest mom spotlight, and WELCOME!

New Member Spotlight - Summer

"My name is Summer and we just had our first daughter, Surfia, 3 months ago. We are so excited to join the ladies in stroller strides. It's nice to be surrounded by other mom's who value being healthy and getting back into shape!

As haole as we look, my sweet husband was born and raised in Kihei back when it was dirt roads and one stop light, and I was born and raised in Nu'uanu. We now live and work in Nanakuli (Waianae), so Surfia and I will primarily be attending the Kapolei Stroller Strides as it is just a quick 15 minute drive away.

Things we enjoy are spending time with friends and family (we are fortunate enough to have both sides of the family on O'ahu), playing in the water (surfing, kayaking, swimming, etc), picnic's, supporting local businesses, and of course loving and playing with our new love of our life - Surfia.

We can't wait to meet you and hopefully set up some play dates!

Wake up every morning and believe it will be the best day ever!"

Thank you Summer for introducing us to you and your family! We look forward to getting to know you better in class!

New Member Spotlight - Gia

Welcome to GIA and CAMREN, newest members at Ocean Pointe!

"Aloha! My name is Gia and I just joined Stroller Strides. My husband, son and I were just stationed here last month from Charleston, SC. Our son Camren will be 3 years old in January and is our whole world! I am anxious to get back to my pre-preggo weight before trying for baby #2! We live in Ocean Pointe and my husband works at Hickam AFB as an aircraft loadmaster on C-17's. My husband Chuck and I just celebrated our 8th anniversary this past week and have been together almost 12 years now. We are missing our families & friends back home, but I am excited about meeting new friends in the neighborhood through SS!"

New Member Spotlight - Brandy

"Aloha everyone!! My name is Brandy and I joined Stroller Strides in March of this year along with my daughter, Hannah (13 months). I am an Ocean Pointe mom, but you will see me at Kapolei and CORP as well. I am very thankful for SS as it has transformed me, and I have met some of the nicest women (and kids) and created a lot of friendships, so thank you!!

A little about myself ~ I am originally from Idaho and my husband is from Alaska. We moved to the Hawaiian Islands from Seattle, WA in June '07. We lived on Kauai for a couple months and then moved over to Oahu in August of '07 and have been in Ewa Beach since. My husband, Jay, is a Project Engineer for Kiewit, so we do find ourselves moving around a bit. I am not sure where we will be in the next year, so we are enjoying Hawaii as much as possible. Our daughter Hannah came in August '08 and has been the highlight of our lives.

Since we had Hannah, and since we move often, I am currently a stay at home mom but have taken on a new venture as an Independent Scentsy Consultant. You can click on the link to visit my website.

I look forward to my morning SS workouts with great instructors and fantastic moms. And most of all, I look forward to creating more friendships!!!"

Thank you Brandy for sharing and introducing yourself to us, and most of all, WELCOME!

Mom Spotlight - Aloha

Hi everyone! It is me, your friendly blog-master. I thought it was about time that I introduce myself, since I am always trying to get everyone else to send me their photos and bios.
I was born in Honolulu, but was raised in Southern California. I grew up just outside of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley (yes, this is THE "valley," and I used to talk like a Valley-girl). I have a Bachelor's degree in Communication from the University of California at Santa Barbara, with an emphasis in Mass Media effects. Although I worked for Nickelodeon briefly after graduating, Hawaii called out to me and I moved here soon after. Little did I know I would never leave!

I currently work as the Director of Operations for a Floral and Event Design Company. I am so fortunate to be able to work part-time from home, allowing me to spend a lot of time with my girls.

My husband, Noa and I have been married for 6.5 years. We have 3 and a half year old Nanea, and 14 month old Makena. Noa is a pilot with the Hawaii Air National Guard, and flies the C-17. He is gone frequently, but we've grown accustomed to it. He also used to fly for Aloha Airlines, but we all know what happened to them!

Stroller Strides is such a wonderful part of our lives. It gets me out of the house, and in a relatively short amount of time after I started, I got to my pre-pregnancy weight! I have met so many wonderful, inspiring women, and am so glad to have "mommy" friends. I keep wondering what on earth I'll do when Makena is too old for Stroller Strides...can I keep coming without a kid? Or maybe borrow someone's? At least I have a few more years to worry about that.

I hope I will be able to eventually meet all of you!

New Member Spotlight - Gwen

Aloha Ladies! My name is Gwen and I am a mommy to a 3 year-old son named Tanner, and a 4 month-old baby boy named Chase. I have lived in Ko Olina for over 7 years and am just now making roots on the Leeward side after commuting to downtown for so long to work for Honolulu Magazine.

I am really enjoying Stroller Strides. I am not someone who likes to exercise, but I love these workouts…being outside, the diversity of the workouts, being around other mamas and doing something for me, while still being with my baby. My husband joins me on Saturdays for a family workout and he is so impressed by how hard our workouts are!

I have recently launched a new company, Baby Guru, which offers baby-proofing and workshops in infant massage, making homemade baby food, infant CPR and other services to keep our keiki safe, healthy and happy!

---------------

Thank you Gwen for taking the plunge and being our latest "new member spotlight!"

We encourage both "new" and "old" members to please send us photos and a little bit about yourself so that we can all know each other a little better, and be able to put names with faces!

Meet Beth! Our new Playgroup Captain!

Hi! My name is Beth and I am the proud mother of Kyle (3 yrs.) and Kara (6 mon). For those of you who don't know me you can find me at Kapolei working out with Kara in the Bjorn and Kyle in the stroller. We just moved here from Pleasant HillCA at the end of March. After settling in a bit I was pleased to find Stroller Strides in May as a great way to lose the baby weight, get fit, and meet some friends for both the kids and I.

I am also excited to announce that I am the new Playgroup Captain for the Leeward Oahu Stroller Strides. Being a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with numerous years of experience working with little ones and teaching social language skills, I am excited to use my creativity to help Kyle have a great time with all his little Stroller Stride buddies! My goal is to help the keiki and their mommies have fun; to give the mommies a chance to chat/ have a break; and to make it so that the kiddos look forward to coming each week. I am truly enjoying being a part of Stroller Strides and I am looking forward to having fun with everyone on Friday in Kapolei!

Welcome Beth!!  And, thank you for taking on this position within SS Leeward!  We look forward to more fun and exciting playgroups!

New Member Spotlight - Susan

"Hello, my name is Susan and I have 2 high energy boys named Declan (5.5) and Darian (3). We moved to Hawaii about 2 years ago to start our own granite business.  We are super excited to join Stroller Strides after years and years of being gym rats. We are all pleasantly surprised at how tough and challenging stroller strides is physically. Even Declan said "mommy, I don't want to go to stroller strides, it's too hard," as he was riding his scooter beside me one class.  We are enjoying being outside and getting to know the great ladies and their keiki at class.  Thank you all for being so warm and welcoming to us.  Looking forward to the next class (if I can walk that is...Ha Ha)."

Mom Spotlight - Stephanie *UPDATE*

**UPDATE**  Sarah just emailed to let me know that Stephanie had reached her goal  that she set for herself, and is ready for her APFT.  CONGRATULATIONS Stephanie!!  Here is her spotlight below:

Welcome Stephanie to our mom spotlight.  Stephanie is a killer runner, usually in the front of the pack, pushing her double stroller!  Stephanie attends classes at Ocean Pointe (M, W), CORP (Tu, Th) and occasionally on Fridays at Kapolei.

Stephanie writes:

"Hello!  My name is Stephanie.  I have two children, Jennifer (5) and Patrick (1).  I am originally from Connecticut and moved to Hawaii 2 and a half years ago.  My husband is in the Navy, and is stationed at Pearl Harbor.  I have always had to stay in some kind of shape to pass my APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) because I was in the active Army for three years and I am currently in the Hawaii National Guard.  During my pregnancy and after the birth of Patrick, I didn't do any exercise at all and wasn't eating what I should, and too much of what I shouldn't.
I finally had to take my first APFT with my unit.  Part of the test is a 2 mile run that has to be completed within 21 minutes.  I barely made the 2 miles in that time.  I had never done so poorly on my run, and I felt horrible about it.  That Monday, I was browsing the computer and came upon the Stroller Strides website.  Stroller Strides has given me the motivation to start exercising, and Weight Watchers has helped me on the food side.  I have lost almost 40 pounds since October and feel a lot better about myself.  My unit is taking another APFT in April and I can't wait!  Besides running, I like to hike, read, scrapbook and photography.

Stephanie ran in the Straub/Kapiolani Women's 10K this weekend (see photo above), and finished in an amazing 50:02 minutes (thanks Sarah for the info!).  She is planning on running the Honolulu Marathon this December, and has already begun training for it.
Thanks Stephanie for taking part in our mom spotlight "series!"  You are truly an inspiration!

Mom Spotlight - Joni

Welcome to our new owner, Joni, and thank you for being part of our "mom spotlight!"

Joni writes:
"It's wonderful for me to be joining Stroller Strides as the new owner! I moved to Hawaii in January and couldn't find a gym with child care that I liked. Stroller Strides was the answer! I wondered if it would be a walk in the park, maybe a few strength exercises, and I was fabulously WRONG! I love the full body workout I get from every Stroller Strides class.
I grew up in San Diego and have been all over the map since then. I met my husband, Jeff, at BYU and have an oh-so-practical degree in history. Our family just moved back to the States after living in England for the past three years. It was a wonderful opportunity and I even picked up some British lingo while we were there (which has sadly all disappeared).

I've always been interested in fitness, played sports in high
school, started lifting weights in college, and went to the gym religiously while living in the UK. I had a British friend who also loved fitness but didn't have the time or interest in paying to use a gym. For her, I started replicating my Saturday circuits class. We met in the gymnasium of our church and I would repeat my circuits class for her. After a few weeks, more friends started to come out, and soon we had a regular class of moms who came with their babies to spend an hour doing sprints, push-ups, squats, and tricep dips. (Sound familiar?!)
I love the camaraderie of Stroller Strides and being able to work out, have fun, and take my children along. After three years in England, I am so grateful to be able to work out in the sunshine and fresh air. It makes Stroller Strides even better! My children are Leah (6), Caleb (4), and Sara (2). They enjoy making friends, too, and my son loves to yell "Run faster!" as we jog around the park. Leah has started grabbing her own resistance band for when we do resistance work, too!

For those of you who are in the program now, I would love to get your comments and suggestions. How can we make Stroller Strides an even BETTER fit for you and your family?

If you're thinking about joining and doing some research on the program: COME! You won't know until you try it. I showed up for my first class with a broken umbrella stroller, not sure if exercise and kids would mix, and went home so excited. I loved being in a group, the energy, the workout, and the friends I made. The kids have learned to love it too, and now I enjoy having them along, rather than worrying about available slots at the gym for childcare.

Thanks to everyone at Stroller Strides for such a warm welcome. It's been a wonderful adventure already! I look forward to all the classes, Mom's Night Out, playgroups, races, and location classes ahead!"

Meet the Trainers (Part 3 - Sarah)

Part 3 of our "Meet the Trainers" series introduces us to our last trainer, and
Stroller Strides Central Leeward owner, Sarah.

Sarah writes:

"Hello, my name is Sarah Hoey. I LOVE STROLLER STRIDES. I have been involved in (the) fitness (industry) for 8 years and am AFAA, ACE, Stroller Strides, Pilates, Spinning, Turbo-Kick and Water Aerobics certified. I also carry my personal trainer certification.

I own and believe in Stroller Strides because of the members. My body changed after I had a baby and I was alone and sad at times.
This was a huge transition in my life. I discovered Stroller Strides at a parade, and all it took was one trail class and I was hooked.

I have been involved in fitness forever but this was different because it came with the support of real mommies, talk time, workout time, mom's night out, and a chance to feel comfortable in my own skin again.

Since having my daughter, Sophia Ella Shirley Hoey, I have moved 4 times, and finally settled in Hawaii. I am originally from north of Calgary Alberta Canada. Yes, a huge change of climate, yet I love it.

Like the other trainers, I spend my time on fitness goals of my own. I have run 3 half marathon, and compete in figure and fitness model competitions.

As the owner of Stroller Strides, I want to meet you if you are reading this, and encourage your to get back into shape and meet our amazing mommies who have so much to share and offer.

See you soon,
Sarah Hoey, LIFE LONG STRIDER

Photos from Sarah's Figure and Fitness Model Competitions:

Thank you Sarah for letting us get to know you better and for sharing your AMAZING competition photos with us. You are definitely an inspiration, and the true meaning of a HOT MAMA!!

Mom Spotlight - "Eva"

Our next mom spotlight introduces us to Eva, who you may have seen at class lately taking photos of everyone sweating.

Eva writes:

"I guess since I am taking pictures of everyone and invading people's privacy, hahaha, I should let people know a little about me.

My name is Chi Fung, but almost everyone calls me Eva.  "Chi" means smart, and "Fung" means "unpredictable like the wind," so I guess I'm smart and unpredictable.  I got the name Eva from my uncle, after he noticed how everyone was butchering my Chinese name.  Eva means "doll-faced."

I was born in Hong Kong, but moved to Hawaii when I was 4 years old, and pretty much have lived here most of my life.  I graduated from the Universuty of Hawaii at Manoa with a B.Ed in Elementary Education, and taught 6th grade English at Kalakaua Middle School for 2 years.  I am currently on leave to take care of Logan.

My hobbies include eating (who doesn't?!), sleeping (whenever possible) and trying new things as much as possible.

Before I had Logan I helped coach my high school's wrestling and judo team.  I'm also nationally certified as a judo referee.  Back in the day, I was wrestling Eastern Division and OIA League champion and State Runner-up.  I also competed nationally in judo tournaments.  The last tournament I competed in was the Collegiate Judo National Tournament in Chicago, and placed 4th in my weight class.

I love Stroller Strides!  I first learned about SS on FitTV while I was pregnant, and was ecstatic when I found out there was a SS in Kapolei (courtesy of Logan's pediatrician's office).  I love how SS motivates all the moms to work out and children to get up and move.  I love how it brings everyone together by having fun activities like beach days, playgroups and ESPECIALLY Mom's Night Out.  With all this motivation, I know that I will be able to reach my fitness goals with the help of STROLLER STRIDES!

Gabe, Logan and Eva
